My Ultimate Skincare Routine: A Personal Guide to Glowing Skin

Skincare-Collage-SS21-Ojos-scaled

If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be obsessed with skincare, I probably would have laughed while wiping my face with a random bar of soap. But here I am, years (and countless product trials) later, fully committed to my skincare routine like it’s my full-time job.

I used to think skincare was just about washing your face and slapping on some moisturizer. Oh, how naive I was! Over time, I realized that skincare is self-care, a little moment of zen in my otherwise chaotic life. Plus, when my skin looks good, I feel good. So, let me take you through my ultimate skincare routine—the products, the techniques, and the small joys of taking care of my face.

Morning Routine: Waking My Skin Up

Mornings are not my strong suit, but my skincare routine helps me shake off the grogginess and feel a little more human. Here’s how it goes down:

  1. Gentle Cleanser – I start with a mild, hydrating cleanser because my skin can be a bit dramatic (read: sensitive). I avoid anything too harsh in the morning—I just need to refresh my skin, not strip it dry.
  2. Vitamin C Serum – This step changed my life. Vitamin C brightens my skin, evens out my tone, and makes me look like I actually get eight hours of sleep (which I don’t). It’s like an instant glow boost.
  3. Hydrating Toner – I used to skip toner, but I’ve learned that it preps the skin for everything that follows. A good hydrating toner makes my skin plump and happy.
  4. Moisturizer – Even though I have combination skin, I never skip moisturizer. Hydration is key, and I use a lightweight gel moisturizer in the morning to keep things fresh.
  5. Sunscreen (SPF 50, Always!) – If there’s one non-negotiable step, it’s sunscreen. No matter what the weather looks like, I slather on my SPF like my life depends on it. Because, well, my skin’s health does depend on it.

And just like that, I’m awake, protected, and (hopefully) ready to face the world.

Evening Routine: The Real Magic Happens Here

Nighttime is when I give my skin the love and care it truly deserves. After a long day of pollution, stress, and possibly regrettable food choices, my skin needs a proper reset. Here’s my full-on evening ritual:

  1. Double Cleansing (Oil + Water-Based Cleanser) – If I’m wearing sunscreen (which I always am) or makeup, I double cleanse. An oil cleanser melts away all the gunk, and then a water-based cleanser ensures my skin is truly clean. This step alone has helped me avoid breakouts.
  2. Exfoliation (2-3 Times a Week) – I alternate between a chemical exfoliant (AHA/BHA) and a gentle physical scrub. This keeps my skin smooth, unclogs pores, and prevents dullness.
  3. Hydrating or Soothing Toner – Again, toner is key! At night, I go for something calming, especially if I’ve exfoliated.
  4. Serums and Treatments – This is where I get fancy. Depending on what my skin needs, I might use:
  5. Niacinamide (for oil control and brightening)
  6. Hyaluronic Acid (for hydration)
  7. Retinol (anti-aging and skin renewal, but only a few times a week)
  8. Moisturizer (Richer than Morning One) – At night, I go for a slightly thicker moisturizer to lock in all that goodness. If my skin feels extra dry, I might use a sleeping mask.
  9. Lip Balm & Eye Cream – The Forgotten Heroes! My under-eyes get a little boost from a nourishing cream, and my lips stay soft with a good balm.

By the time I’m done, I feel like I’ve performed a sacred ritual. Skincare at night is truly my moment of peace.

Bonus: Skincare Extras & Self-Care Rituals

Apart from my daily routine, I love indulging in some skincare extras that make me feel fancy:

  • Sheet Masks – At least once a week, especially if my skin feels dry or tired. Plus, they force me to sit still and relax for 15 minutes.
  • Facial Massaging with a Gua Sha – Helps with circulation and makes me feel like a skincare guru.
  • Clay Masks – For when my pores need a deep clean.

Hydration Mist – A midday pick-me-up, especially in summer.

What I’ve Learned About Skincare (So You Don’t Have to Make the Same Mistakes)

  1. Through trial, error, and a few unfortunate breakouts, I’ve learned some key skincare lessons:
  2. More Products ≠ Better Skin – I used to pile on every trendy product I could find, but my skin freaked out. Now I stick to what works for my skin type.
  3. Sunscreen is the Best Anti-Aging Product – Forget fancy creams. SPF is the best way to keep your skin looking young.
  4. Listen to Your Skin – Some days it needs extra hydration, other days it just needs a break. Skincare is not one-size-fits-all.
  5. Patience is Key – Skincare isn’t instant. It takes time to see real results, so don’t ditch a product after two days.

Final Thoughts: Skincare is Self-Care

Taking care of my skin isn’t just about vanity—it’s about feeling good in my own skin (literally). It’s a little act of self-love in a busy world. Some people meditate, some people journal—I do my skincare routine.

If you’re on your own skincare journey, my biggest advice is to keep it simple, stay consistent, and most importantly, enjoy the process. Your skin will thank you for it!
